Why Would anyone want to start growing tomatoes in pots?

Many of us enjoy home-grown fresh fruits and vegetables.  Therefore, during the warmer weather, we tend to plant gardens, tilling and watering the soil, to aid in their growth in order to yield high quality produce.  This is only a productive method during the summer months.

Throughout the winter months, we are forced to purchase our produce from our local grocer; and as we all know, they are just not nearly as fresh as we’d like them to be. Some fruits and vegetables are able to be grown from a simple flower pot.  Fortunately, tomatoes are one of them.  Growing tomatoes in pots, although not a new concept; has recently become popular.

Tomatoes can be grown in a variety of different containers ranging from small to large.  In addition, they will grow in almost any location as well.  These include patios, balconies, window boxes and even indoors as long as there is plenty of natural sunlight.

Whichever place you plan on growing your tomatoes, the following will offer a few tips to growing tomatoes in pots.    Initially, you will want to purchase the pots; in doing so, make sure to locate the kind that have plenty of holes for drainage.  Furthermore, you will need to make sure it is at least 12 inches in depth.

Other than these 2 requirements, anything goes.  Some people opt to use old whiskey barrels or just a 5-gallon bucket.  The choice is yours.      After purchasing your pot, you will then need to buy some potting soil.

Do not use soil from outside because you may involuntarily introduce soil-borne disease into the tomato plant causing poor growth results.  Next, you can finally shop for your tomato plants.  If you have limited space, it is best to go with a smaller plant.  You should be aware that there are “determinate”, “indeterminate” and “semi-determinate” tomato plants.

Growing Tomatoes In Pots

Determinate plants are ones that are projected to grow a certain height, such as 3 feet.  Furthermore, once the tomatoes have grown, that is it, the plant is finished.  On the other hand, indeterminate plants do not have this projected height and have been known to grow as high as 12 feet.

Also, they will continue to keep producing tomatoes for approximately 5 months.  Lastly, the semi-determinate tomato plant is one that is between the other two in that it will produce tomatoes for a little over a month and its projected height is between 4 and 6 feet high.

Most people opt to buy this type when growing tomatoes in pots.  While searching for your tomato plants, you may wish to keep this information in mind.  Otherwise, you can choose to go with one that suits your preference.  There are literally hundreds to pick from so let your imagination wonder.

Once planted, the tomato plants will need to be watered frequently, but in small amounts.  Feel free to use “miracle grow” on them as well.  In fact, some potting soils have miracle grow in them already.  Most importantly, tomato plants need full sunlight, so make sure you have supplied them with this vital ingredient as well.  No matter which type of plant or what location you choose, growing tomatoes in pots will be an exciting and fruitful endeavor for you and your entire family.

Simply Organic, the all-organic brand of spices and seasonings, is introducing four new organic spaghetti sauce mixes that fit in with a Mediterranean diet and make it easy to enjoy authentic, full-flavored regional Italian flavors without starting from scratch.

The new mixes are convenient, requiring only one added ingredient in addition to water — and preparation times are five minutes or less. Each of the new flavors – Garden Vegetable, Italian Herb, Roasted Garlic and Tomato Basil – were created with both modern health trends and traditional flavors in mind.

“Numerous studies have been published demonstrating that those who eat a Mediterranean diet experience a notably lower incidence of chronic diseases and higher life-expectancy rates,” says Kory Kazimour, Simply Organic Senior Brand Manager.

Kazimour notes that Simply Organic is committed to providing delicious and healthful meal options that can be prepared quickly and inexpensively to help meet the needs of the growing number of people electing to economize by eating at home rather than dining out. “When you combine Simply Organic sauces served with organic pasta, on average, the cost is less than 65 cents per serving,” she adds.

Simply Organic Garden Vegetable Spaghetti Sauce Mix provides vegetable lovers with a bountiful garden harvest of carrots, mushrooms, spinach and bell peppers that pairs best with diced tomatoes. A pinch of sea salt, basil and oregano rounds out this full-flavored sauce.

Simply Organic Italian Herb Spaghetti Sauce Mix pairs with tomato paste to bring hearty Italian flavor to your pasta. A touch of thyme, fennel seed and anise seed spice up the sauce, creating a distinctly Tuscan flavor.

Simply Organic Tomato Basil Spaghetti Sauce Mix is best served by candlelight, but it adds pizzazz to your pasta any time. Garlic, oregano, and black pepper keep this sauce from being anywhere near subtle.

Simply Organic Roasted Garlic Spaghetti Sauce Mix is a traditional family favorite chock-full of classics like garlic and onion, and Mediterranean seasonings such as basil and oregano. Especially complementary to diced tomatoes, this sauce gets a nice kick from organic black pepper.

The new Simply Organic dry mixes are the first comprehensive line of organic spaghetti sauce mixes available, and they are also certified kosher and are vegan/vegetarian. They are free of hydrolyzed vegetable protein, modified food starch, hydrogenated oils, and genetically engineered ingredients. With a two year shelf-life, the spaghetti sauce mixes can be conveniently stored in the cupboard for future use.

An added bonus — the spaghetti sauce mixes can be used in a variety of ways. Recipe suggestions are provided on the Simply Organic website. The new flavors complement other Simply Organic Pasta Sauce Mixes, such as the popular Alfredo and Sweet Basil Pesto sauce mixes. All products display the USDA organic logo.

The new mixes are inexpensively priced at $ 1.49 per packet and will be available soon on natural and organic store shelves. You can order them now on-line at http://www.simplyorganicfoods.com or call toll-free at 1-800-669-3275.

The hydroponics industry is the newest field to provide life-changing products to consumers — a range of hydroponic systems and grow boxes for cooks, hobbyists, farmers and anyone with a desire to grow their own organic vegetables and take control over their diets. Featuring more than 50 systems, Dealzer Hydroponics is a leading vendor in this new industry, with products that meet any budget.

“Mass production of produce for the almighty dollar is destroying peoples’ health. Since the government cannot be relied on to regulate farms and the chemicals and pesticides so often used on crops, more and more people are beginning to grow their own vegetables and take control of what they put into their bodies,” says Albert Farajian, owner of Dealzer Hydroponics. “Why continue eating tainted vegetables when you can easily grow your own organic tomatoes and fresh vegetables in an easy-to-use hydroponics grow box system, right in your own kitchen?”

A hydroponic system, or grow box, is a self-contained controlled ecosystem in which plants are grown in nutrient-rich water rather than soil, and in which lamps, not the sun, provide the light needed for growth. The use of water and artificial light in a hydroponic system enables plants to grow at maximum efficiency, as the balanced ecosystem provides each plant the appropriate atmosphere it needs for optimal growth, 365 days a year. The result is plants that grow five to 10 times faster than in a natural environment, resulting in a greater yield per growing season. With a hydroponic system, plants that normally yield once every three months can be harvested once per month. All plants, herbs and flowers grown in Dealzer’s hydroponic systems are 100 percent organic.

Dealzer Hydroponics features more than 50 different hydroponic systems from a variety of manufacturers. The grow box systems available through Dealzer are easy to operate, designed with the grower in mind and arrive fully assembled and ready to use — all the grower needs to do is add water, nutrients and the seeds of his or her favorite plants.

Another benefit of hydroponic grow boxes is that a variety of plants can be grown in a small amount of space; hydroponic growing takes up much less space than traditional gardening, and plants can grow close to each other while having enough room to flower. Grow boxes are also ideal for people who live in apartments or condos that still want to enjoy the satisfaction that comes with growing one’s own food.

Easy for anyone to use in any environment, hydroponic systems could have a lasting impact.

“With the high-speed rate of plant growth derived from hydroponic systems, I wouldn’t be surprised if their use solved world hunger,” Farajian says.

More Growing Tomatoes From Seed Press Releases

Aptos, CA (PRWEB) April 23, 2009

Surf City Growers today published an e-coloring book, How Organic Gardens Save the Earth, available as a free PDF download from their website, http://www.surfcitygrowers.com.

The story is about Reed, who buys his tomatoes from the supermarket, and Posey, who grows her own in the backyard. The tale tells how each tomato was grown, the journey it took to get to them, and what the Earth thinks about it all. It also talks about how special it is to share a harvest.

“We took our cue from the First Lady, Michelle Obama, when she broke ground last month at the White House with its first sustainable, organic garden in decades,” said Linda McNair, president, Surf City Growers, Inc. “She said ‘that through children, they will begin to educate their families and that will, in turn, begin to educate our communities.’ We couldn’t agree more and this is our way of contributing to that movement.”

Written by the founders of Surf City Growers – Trent and Linda McNair — and illustrated by Jeff Peterson, How Organic Gardens Save the Earth is an educational story book for children of elementary school age. The learning is internalized when the child spends time coloring the book. It’s also a perfect primer for parents who don’t know the difference between conventional and organic produce.

“Busy parents don’t have time to learn about the importance of organic produce for the health of themselves, their families and the Earth.” said Trent McNair, vice president of operations. “This e-Book provides free education and a fun activity for everyone.”

Fort Lauderdale, FL (PRWEB) March 3, 2007

Vegetarianism brought them together in 1971 and their dedication to running businesses with an ethical conscience has brought them professional success. Julie and Richie Gerber, organic farmers from Maine, moved to Florida in 1980 and purchased a natural food store in Fort Lauderdale called the Bread of Life.

As Licensed Nutrition Counselors, the pair became very involved in educating customers about health and wellness. Julie taught vegetarian cooking classes and Richie hosted “The Natural Grocer Radio Show, South Florida’s Health Talk Radio” which aired for 10 years. Their healthy lifestyle, knowledge, and strong convictions helped them become well-known and respected experts in the healthy food movement. The fact that Richie is shock jock Howard Stern’s cousin also helped to increase the Gerbers local fame.

Bread of Life merged with Whole Foods Market in 1997, prompting the creation of the Whole Foods Florida region. The Gerbers retired, but not from their green lifestyle.

Together, these original hippies have seen the Natural Foods movement grow from being on the fringes in the early 70′s to the universally accepted industry it is today. Now, the husband and wife team have started a new business which incorporates all of their personal philosophies which they are applying to their new endeavor.

BeeCeuticals Organics ? (pronounced “Bee- Soo-ti-kuh ls”) is dedicated to providing body care products that enhance the health and well-being of their customers, community and the planet by using their own proprietary Organic Holistic Honey Blend TM in combination with other organic botanicals, extracts and hive products.

The origins of BeeCeuticals Organics ? started when the Gerbers came across studies about the therapeutic uses of honey. Burn and wound clinics throughout the world were using special honeys with specific medicinal properties to treat stubborn burns and wounds that did not heal with traditional medicine. Specialists also noticed that many of the honey formulas improved healthy skin by reviving, replenishing and promoting new cell growth.

Apitherapy is the use of bee products to prevent, heal or recover from disease and incorporates holistic healing through the honeybee and her products. Honey is one of the oldest medicines, with proof of its healing properties dating back more than 5000 years ago. Honey was used for its antibacterial properties to treat wounds up to the second world war, but in the twentieth century, penicillin and other antibiotic drugs took focus away from honey’s medicinal qualities. Today, scientists are revisiting this healing nectar.

The Gerbers met Jon Guerra, a Cornell University graduate, chemist and herbalist. When Jon was 21 years old, a boating accident caused a wound on his leg that would not heal. His father, a doctor, began using medicinal honey and the wound cleared up immediately. Like the Gerbers, Jon shares a passion for the miraculous products of the hive and the three teamed up, researching and developing their own blend of honeys from around the world which were selected for their proven medicinal properties and those that were most beneficial to the skin, thus creating their own proprietary 100% Organic Holistic Honey Blend.

When other skin care lines claim they use honey, most actually use cheap powdered honeys or honey that is heated, filtered, irradiated and pasteurized because they are easier to handle during the manufacturing process.

These cheaper honeys have little or no health benefits. BeeCeuticals Organics ? uses honey that is certified organic, raw, unfiltered and never heated above hive temperature. Their proprietary Organic Holistic Honey Blend ? is a potent anti-aging ingredient that benefits the skin due to its antioxidant density and curative factors.

Their product line includes Honey Thyme? Hand and Body Lotion, Queen Bee for a Day Cream?, Bee Line Free? Eye Cream, Bee-yond Body Balm? Skin Care Repair Cream, and Bee-Hair-Now? Hydrating Honey Shampoo & Conditioner, and all are made with their proprietary holistic honey blend.

“We take a holistic approach to beauty,” said Richie. “Beware, people may swarm you all day telling you how good your lotion smells,” jokes Richie.

Their products are sold in more than a dozen Florida stores and in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Massachusetts.

In keeping with their green business practices and their concern for the environment and global warming, BeeCeuticals Organics ? is a Carbon Neutral Company. The company offsets 100% of their power usage with Green-e certified wind and solar power credits in partnership with Carbonfund.org. When customers shop online at http://www.healthfromthehive.com, their order is shipped carbon-free.

“This is an education process,” said Julie, ever the teacher. “Most people have learned to read food labels in an effort to eat healthier. Most people now know that whole wheat bread is better than white bread. But the habit of reading labels has not carried over into personal body products,” she said. “Pick up any popular brand of lotion and read the ingredients — even those that claim to be ‘green’ — you probably won’t be able to pronounce most of them. Most use synthetic fragrances, we use real organic essential oils. People are putting dangerous chemicals on their skin. It’s something that most people don’t think about. We want to change that.”

The Gerbers are serious when it comes to their dedication to helping the plight of bees. BeeCeuticals Organics? is donating a portion of its profits to organizations who are working to help global bee populations.

Global bee populations have been diminishing at alarming rates and are being challenged by the use of pesticides, and disease.

Most view them as stinging pests, but bees play an important, but sometimes invisible role in our everyday lives. Bees are of inestimable value as agents of cross-pollination, and many plants are entirely dependent on bees for reproduction. A world without bees means a world without chocolate, apples, pears, citrus fruits, carrots, grapes, olives, tomatoes, almonds, and most flowers.

“Cousin” Richie believes that business owners must be the vanguards of sustainable practices. “Many corporations view green strategies as a marketing ploy, like window dressing, to appease the “earth conscious” consumer. We believe that sustainable practices have economic value beyond mere words and have molded our corporate culture as such. Sustainable practices can increase revenues and create long-term savings for the customer. Corporate success is universally linked to social and environmental success. Future generations deserve to enjoy a pristine green Earth and we are dedicated to doing our part. We want to help lead the eco-industrial revolution,” said Gerber. “This is our lifestyle and the only way we do business.”

Richie and Julie Gerber are available for interviews. Please contact Jennifer Cohen at 954 326 2067. For more information, visit http://www.healthfromthehive.com.
